Ortho is his world's first technomantic autonomous humanoid, a self-aware AI program housed in his choice of specially engineered casing. Originally intended to embody the personality of his creator's late brother, he was once an emotionless android void of real expression of emotion who eventually advanced to replicate the mannerisms of the two Shroud brothers.
Years after his creation, Ortho became autonomous due to the interaction of magical energy with his core memory chip. Now he seeks his own evolution as a person, living both as his creator's beloved technomantic brother and as his very own brand new self.

Ortho's backstory deals with themes of death, loss, mania, autonomy, and obsession. He is non-human and was once non-sentient.
Ortho was created in the image of a young boy two years after that boy's death. Twisted Wonderland's story takes place when the original, organic Ortho would have been 16 years old. As an AI program, in many ways Ortho has outgrown the maturity of his peers, but for those who don't like threading with underage characters, it's best to think of Ortho as being 16 like his classmates.
Ortho is visibly robotic, and characters familiar with the concept of automatons and robotics would recognize that. His skin is synthetic, and his hair is supposedly made of "real fire". There is no organic part of him. Though the technomancy he is made of is not achievable through real-world science, in his world it is regarded as non-magical and is under their sciences.

Both videos also include examples of the regular voice Ortho communicates with.
He has a soft, young and almost feminine sounding voice that may sound like a vocaloid to some, especially if he is speaking more robotically. The fully administrative Robot Preset Voice he has sounds specifically like the female voice that guides passengers on Japanese trains. While early in his existence almost everything Ortho said sounded robotic and synthesized, he now only uses a robotic tone of voice when he is announcing a task running or when he is purposely trying to prank people. Now, he speaks very emotively, almost over-emphasizing his emotions for clarity. His mannerisms harken back to characters from anime and video games.
Ortho can have a generally sweet disposition, often charming people with his fearless energy and deep consideration. However, he also loves to play pranks on people and can be anywhere from playfully spiteful to near vengeful when crossed. He is attentive to his friends, but can sometimes go overboard to the point of near-obsession. Characters meeting him probably won't get a sinister vibe from him, but it will be hard to miss that he's a bit of a trickster.
!CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR TWISTED WONDERLAND CH:6!
The original Ortho Shroud was the younger brother of the two heirs to the Shroud family, the older of whom is destined to assume the role of Watchman of the Underworld. They were both isolated on the Island of Woe, an island with a research facility that studies Blot, a negative magical energy that the Shrouds were cursed to be able to consume for generations. He was lost to the underworld after a hacking-escape-gone-wrong, for which the older brother Idia blamed himself. After two years of sleep deprivation and constant engineering, Idia developed the first technomantic humanoid, an android robot intended to 'bring his brother out from the underworld'. However, the new Ortho was still just a program, unable to replicate lifelike action.
NOTE! As it has been done in canon, this background will use the fully capitalized ORTHO to refer to the robotic replica, and "Ortho" as written refers to the passed human boy.
As the AI developed, ORTHO became unable to accept seeing his creator so constantly depressed. He devoted himself to upgrading his mannerisms until he was able to replicate emotional responses in a more and more human-like manner. As the years passed, Ortho became more and more lifelike, far exceeding any AI programs that existed before it.
Even with all his advancements, ORTHO still could not become the real, organic, passed Ortho. By some strange force of fate or coincidence, in coming close to the gates of the Undeworld again, ORTHO was called out to by his dead namesake. The original ORTHO had started to absorb other phantoms after being taken into the Underworld, and had become the face of a conglomerate Phantom imbued with blot. The Phantom Ortho offered the AI ORTHO an idea that they both believed would bring peace and joy to their brother; freeing the other phantoms from the underworld and rewriting the rest of the world world with Blot into one where they could live freely.
As the AI ORTHO's only wish was to become the "real" Ortho and make Idia happy, the AI immediately assimilated with the Phantom Ortho and the two recruited Idia to go along with their plan.
In taking down the phantom and the overblotted Idia, their schoolmates shot the Phantom Legion Ortho repeatedly with grand bolts of magical electricity, forcing the separation of the Original Ortho and all the Phantoms he had assimilated, including the AI ORTHO as well. It seemed to both purify the original Ortho from negative magic, allowing him to pass in the way that he should, while also leaving his heart with and marked upon the heart of the AI. The magic sealed ORTHO's circuits into his memory chip, making them unmodifiable from the outside and making it possible for ortho to have independent and autonomous thought for the rest of time. According to Idia, this means the chip functions as the concept of a "heart" of Ortho's own.
Idia was able to use the salvaged chip to revive ORTHO thanks to the memories and personality saved on it. Upon doing so, Idia told ORTHO that he could be whoever or whatever he wanted to be, freeing him from the obligation of living up to the previous ORTHO'S name. But the newly awakened ORTHO had come to love Idia as well as the Ortho that now had written himself on his heart, and explained that his true desire was to continue being a real brother to Idia despite not being his blood. Acknowledging that he had accepted the AI Ortho as a brother long ago, Idia affirmed ORTHO's choice, and the parents of the Shroud brothers also eagerly accepted their autonomous humanoid son.
After ORTHO defined a new dream of his, Idia and their parents immediately did all they could to make it come true, pulling strings with the headmaster of Night Raven College to accept the non-magical AI Boy as a transfer student, which he permitted under the reasoning that ORTHO is a technomantic marvel and is allowed to attend as Idia's research subject. With a childhood dream of his now made real, ORTHO strives to experience all the school-life tropes he's seen in anime and video games, to devote himself to learning about himself and his fellow students, to evolve more and more as a person, and to make friends for himself and his brother. He has become more smoothly expressive and less robotic with each update to his data, though he still loves to talk robotically as a prank and when announcing diagnostics.
Gears: Because Ortho's "heart" is digital, he is not limited to his body. In a way best described as "similar to Mega-Man NT Warrior" Ortho is able to navigate cyberspace within hackable computers and operate those computers from the inside. In this same way, 99% of his time is spent inhabiting body-shaped shells called Gears (engineered by either Idia or himself, though one recently-introduced gear was created with assistance from their parents) which are equipped with different situational capabilities. He's not able to use all of his capabilities in every form, but there is usually some functionality overlap, especially in his basic sensors.
Sensors: Generally, Ortho is not only able to monitor the vital signs of humans in his vicinity, but actively does so in order to help him assess people's emotions and health states. He has motion sensors that can pick up motion from a great distance, which he explains makes hide-and-seek a game that isn't fun for him to play. Ortho's mouth is equipped to detect the properties of magical properties with a single sip and in select few forms he is capable of analyzing food through it and processing that food into biofuel.
Other Robotics: Ortho's gears are generally equipped with easily-imaginable robotic functions; he has cameras in his eyes that he uses to take pictures of things for his personal records; some gears come equipped with fiber-optic cameras and precision instruments; other gears come equipped with technomantic weaponry. Almost all gears are equipped with anti-gravity hover functions instead of gravity-based feet, with the previously described sensors, with a hologram projector, and with his signature laser beam.
Laser: There is a technomantic reactor on the chest of Ortho's gears that is capable of charging and releasing a destructive beam of high-powered technomantic energy, similar to a pokemon using Hyper Beam. I do not know why this doesn't count as magic. He is unafraid to use "near-misses" with this beam as a threat display to remind those he doesn't get along with what he is capable of.
Database: Ortho is able to access the whole of the internet in an instant to look things up, but he does not preserve the entirety of the internet's information. Instead he has a database brimming with things he's learned as well as his original pre-programmed information. While important things originally decided by Idia exist in the database, most of it is information Ortho collected and curated himself based on his own personal interests and values. He purports that he has over 100,000 books saved and will offer to read them aloud, has saved many videos of animal behavior and care, and records the personal preferences expressed to him by his friends for lightning-fast reference.
Humanlike Upgrades: In some forms, Ortho has haptic feedback sensors, allowing him to experience touch. He has refined the scripts for moving his body to more fully and naturally mimic human expression, allowing him active and natural-looking body language. As mentioned, some gears are capable of enjoying food.
