sexuality: no preference

player name: lucifer lovestruck
contact: pm or [plurk.com profile] love_letters
age: 30+
tag speed: Inconsistent; usually late nights and early mornings on CST/CDT. I'm a fast tagger most of the time but may have delays of several days in between days of boomeranging. I don't mind if you don't match my speed!

crosscanon: Y, and crossmedium too. OCs, etc. all welcome!
bracket/prose: brackets preferred, but I'll match whatever format.
backtagging: As long as you tag, I'll tag back, even if it's months down the line. If I'm taking a few weeks, hit me up, cos I might have lost a notif.
threadhopping: All's good with me as long as it's good w/ everyone.
fourthwalling: Go ahead.

physical affection: I love writing this, and some of his gear have tactile sensors to detect touch. Even when they don't, he's capable of giving hugs and holding hands for the sake of others.
smut/shipping: Open to this, but not actually expecting it. Be his friend for sure tho!!
violence: I'm open, but power scaling with a robot sounds tough and not fun so. let's just keep it lighthearted ig
Injury/Death: let's keep injury minor and avoid permanent death.

relationships: Mostly looking for platonic stuff w him, but I think shipping with him could end up stupid cute, too, so if you're open to kissing a humanoid machine, lmk

fav ships: Ortho/Deuce?? I actually don't know what Ortho ships are out there, so tell me their stories.

wishes & tropes: Ortho loves helping people and learning about the world! Be his friend! He's here to be your favorite assistant.

NSFW Desires
I don't actually know that anyone's ever gonna smut with him but I really like the idea of trans themes in robots and think "chose to be a boy" Ortho is rad. He's got mechanical parts that can be interchanged, so this probably won't even come up, I just think it'd be cool?? idk.

speaking of, he is modular and infinitely expandable, and it would be funny and cute to play with his ability to Be the Sex Toy, especially if it means he's having to give the other confidence. He's probably not actually the bottom in situations, or at least is like, a service top. His own gratification would be psychological, so he would be more focused on his partner's pleasure than his own.

not interested in: grimdark/hopeless plots. Dark subject matter is ok, just not looking for bad end feels.

magical info: ORTHO is not capable of conducting magic himself, but his technology is produced through technomancy, which is the intersection between magic and technology. It's a little unclear, but tl;dr Magic Made Him, but He Cannot Make Magic.
physiological info: Known as a 'technomantic humanoid', which in our world is basically an android. He's self-aware, but his body is completely inorganic and was not made of anything organic previously (i.e. he is not a cyborg).
appearance: Stands at 148cm tall, but since he hovers, he might float at variable heights higher than that. his hair looks like blue fire, and usually has half of his face covered at any one time by either his skull-motif mask or by

voice: you can see this info if you nav to the link that says 'info' tho

scent: oil???? but probably not idia wouldn't be so sloppy. maybe vaguely of ozone. ifk

// QUICK INFO

Ortho is his world's first technomantic autonomous humanoid, a self-aware AI program housed in his choice of specially engineered casing. Originally intended to embody the personality of his creator's late brother, he was once an emotionless android void of real expression of emotion who eventually advanced to replicate the mannerisms of the two Shroud brothers.

Years after his creation, Ortho became autonomous due to the interaction of magical energy with his core memory chip. Now he seeks his own evolution as a person, living both as his creator's beloved technomantic brother and as his very own brand new self.

CONTENT NOTES

Ortho's backstory deals with themes of death, loss, mania, autonomy, and obsession. He is non-human and was once non-sentient.

Ortho was created in the image of a young boy two years after that boy's death. Twisted Wonderland's story takes place when the original, organic Ortho would have been 16 years old. As an AI program, in many ways Ortho has outgrown the maturity of his peers, but for those who don't like threading with underage characters, it's best to think of Ortho as being 16 like his classmates.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Ortho is visibly robotic, and characters familiar with the concept of automatons and robotics would recognize that. His skin is synthetic, and his hair is supposedly made of "real fire". There is no organic part of him. Though the technomancy he is made of is not achievable through real-world science, in his world it is regarded as non-magical and is under their sciences.

𝝙 Robotic Voice (Youtube) | 𝝙 Robotic-imitation voice (youtube)
Both videos also include examples of the regular voice Ortho communicates with.

He has a soft, young and almost feminine sounding voice that may sound like a vocaloid to some, especially if he is speaking more robotically. The fully administrative Robot Preset Voice he has sounds specifically like the female voice that guides passengers on Japanese trains. While early in his existence almost everything Ortho said sounded robotic and synthesized, he now only uses a robotic tone of voice when he is announcing a task running or when he is purposely trying to prank people. Now, he speaks very emotively, almost over-emphasizing his emotions for clarity. His mannerisms harken back to characters from anime and video games.

Ortho can have a generally sweet disposition, often charming people with his fearless energy and deep consideration. However, he also loves to play pranks on people and can be anywhere from playfully spiteful to near vengeful when crossed. He is attentive to his friends, but can sometimes go overboard to the point of near-obsession. Characters meeting him probably won't get a sinister vibe from him, but it will be hard to miss that he's a bit of a trickster.

BACKGROUND
!CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR TWISTED WONDERLAND CH:6!

The original Ortho Shroud was the younger brother of the two heirs to the Shroud family, the older of whom is destined to assume the role of Watchman of the Underworld. They were both isolated on the Island of Woe, an island with a research facility that studies Blot, a negative magical energy that the Shrouds were cursed to be able to consume for generations. He was lost to the underworld after a hacking-escape-gone-wrong, for which the older brother Idia blamed himself. After two years of sleep deprivation and constant engineering, Idia developed the first technomantic humanoid, an android robot intended to 'bring his brother out from the underworld'. However, the new Ortho was still just a program, unable to replicate lifelike action.

NOTE! As it has been done in canon, this background will use the fully capitalized ORTHO to refer to the robotic replica, and "Ortho" as written refers to the passed human boy.

As the AI developed, ORTHO became unable to accept seeing his creator so constantly depressed. He devoted himself to upgrading his mannerisms until he was able to replicate emotional responses in a more and more human-like manner. As the years passed, Ortho became more and more lifelike, far exceeding any AI programs that existed before it.

Even with all his advancements, ORTHO still could not become the real, organic, passed Ortho. By some strange force of fate or coincidence, in coming close to the gates of the Undeworld again, ORTHO was called out to by his dead namesake. The original ORTHO had started to absorb other phantoms after being taken into the Underworld, and had become the face of a conglomerate Phantom imbued with blot. The Phantom Ortho offered the AI ORTHO an idea that they both believed would bring peace and joy to their brother; freeing the other phantoms from the underworld and rewriting the rest of the world world with Blot into one where they could live freely.

As the AI ORTHO's only wish was to become the "real" Ortho and make Idia happy, the AI immediately assimilated with the Phantom Ortho and the two recruited Idia to go along with their plan.

In taking down the phantom and the overblotted Idia, their schoolmates shot the Phantom Legion Ortho repeatedly with grand bolts of magical electricity, forcing the separation of the Original Ortho and all the Phantoms he had assimilated, including the AI ORTHO as well. It seemed to both purify the original Ortho from negative magic, allowing him to pass in the way that he should, while also leaving his heart with and marked upon the heart of the AI. The magic sealed ORTHO's circuits into his memory chip, making them unmodifiable from the outside and making it possible for ortho to have independent and autonomous thought for the rest of time. According to Idia, this means the chip functions as the concept of a "heart" of Ortho's own.

Idia was able to use the salvaged chip to revive ORTHO thanks to the memories and personality saved on it. Upon doing so, Idia told ORTHO that he could be whoever or whatever he wanted to be, freeing him from the obligation of living up to the previous ORTHO'S name. But the newly awakened ORTHO had come to love Idia as well as the Ortho that now had written himself on his heart, and explained that his true desire was to continue being a real brother to Idia despite not being his blood. Acknowledging that he had accepted the AI Ortho as a brother long ago, Idia affirmed ORTHO's choice, and the parents of the Shroud brothers also eagerly accepted their autonomous humanoid son.

After ORTHO defined a new dream of his, Idia and their parents immediately did all they could to make it come true, pulling strings with the headmaster of Night Raven College to accept the non-magical AI Boy as a transfer student, which he permitted under the reasoning that ORTHO is a technomantic marvel and is allowed to attend as Idia's research subject. With a childhood dream of his now made real, ORTHO strives to experience all the school-life tropes he's seen in anime and video games, to devote himself to learning about himself and his fellow students, to evolve more and more as a person, and to make friends for himself and his brother. He has become more smoothly expressive and less robotic with each update to his data, though he still loves to talk robotically as a prank and when announcing diagnostics.

ABILITIES

Gears: Because Ortho's "heart" is digital, he is not limited to his body. In a way best described as "similar to Mega-Man NT Warrior" Ortho is able to navigate cyberspace within hackable computers and operate those computers from the inside. In this same way, 99% of his time is spent inhabiting body-shaped shells called Gears (engineered by either Idia or himself, though one recently-introduced gear was created with assistance from their parents) which are equipped with different situational capabilities. He's not able to use all of his capabilities in every form, but there is usually some functionality overlap, especially in his basic sensors.

Sensors: Generally, Ortho is not only able to monitor the vital signs of humans in his vicinity, but actively does so in order to help him assess people's emotions and health states. He has motion sensors that can pick up motion from a great distance, which he explains makes hide-and-seek a game that isn't fun for him to play. Ortho's mouth is equipped to detect the properties of magical properties with a single sip and in select few forms he is capable of analyzing food through it and processing that food into biofuel.

Other Robotics: Ortho's gears are generally equipped with easily-imaginable robotic functions; he has cameras in his eyes that he uses to take pictures of things for his personal records; some gears come equipped with fiber-optic cameras and precision instruments; other gears come equipped with technomantic weaponry. Almost all gears are equipped with anti-gravity hover functions instead of gravity-based feet, with the previously described sensors, with a hologram projector, and with his signature laser beam.

Laser: There is a technomantic reactor on the chest of Ortho's gears that is capable of charging and releasing a destructive beam of high-powered technomantic energy, similar to a pokemon using Hyper Beam. I do not know why this doesn't count as magic. He is unafraid to use "near-misses" with this beam as a threat display to remind those he doesn't get along with what he is capable of.

Database: Ortho is able to access the whole of the internet in an instant to look things up, but he does not preserve the entirety of the internet's information. Instead he has a database brimming with things he's learned as well as his original pre-programmed information. While important things originally decided by Idia exist in the database, most of it is information Ortho collected and curated himself based on his own personal interests and values. He purports that he has over 100,000 books saved and will offer to read them aloud, has saved many videos of animal behavior and care, and records the personal preferences expressed to him by his friends for lightning-fast reference.

Humanlike Upgrades: In some forms, Ortho has haptic feedback sensors, allowing him to experience touch. He has refined the scripts for moving his body to more fully and naturally mimic human expression, allowing him active and natural-looking body language. As mentioned, some gears are capable of enjoying food.

Do you have any plans for this character in the game? Ortho loves helping people and thinks himself a bit of a hero, so he's here to help! I hope he'll get to meet a lot of people, learn from collecting data about them, and start making connections with people outside his school. Since he has a bit of an obsessive nature, it'd be cool if he could learn from the inevitable friction that'll cause, too.

Did your character willingly come to Iyashikei? If yes, why? Yes, because of understanding magic but not necessarily understanding the scope of how immediately he would be asked to leave his home.
Will they need any special accommodations upon arrival? Ortho will need a way to charge what physical bodies he might have, which run on technomantic batteries and power systems. Or a perpetually charged battery? I'm really not picky. Technically he'd also need like. Server space?? But I'm willing to magic-explanation that for the sake of simplicity.

Character's History: Twisted Wonderland Wiki

Questions:

1. Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them. How would your character act once someone got to know them?

Ortho is surprising to the people that meet him, even in his own world. While his appearance is unmistakably technological, he calibrates his body's movement scripts every day to become more and more natural based on information he gathered from observing those around him. While strangers can't deny his initial appearance is robotic, they are often surprised by how lifelike he can act, even though he sometimes likes to trick them by acting more like a program when introducing himself.

He is incredibly observant, and by this point in canon, openly playful even when meeting new people. He isn't afraid to tease folks, and usually isn't spiteful about it— though, if someone who's just met him is badmouthing him or his brother, they'll be treated to the more vindictive side of Ortho's personality very quickly. He's merciful as well, often giving people the chance to be friends after they've learned the lesson he's decided they need to learn.

Most people, though, will simply meet a polite yet animated and excitable little dude who sometimes seems like he's talking from a position of being way, way bigger than you on the inside, despite being so small on the outside.

The more they spend time with Ortho, characters in his canon are surprised by his thoughtfulness, ingenuity, playfulness, and friendliness. They also... tend to be blown away by how much like his brother he can be, though his particular mischief is unhindered by the same fear and social anxiety that Idia is limited by. Ortho loves to pull pranks on his friends, and loved doing so even before he had fully awakened as a sentient program. He enjoys watching the vital signs of humans change in response to being surprised by him, and often says things purposely to get reactions out of them. And also like Idia, Ortho's immediate solutions to problems can often be overly complicated and over-the-top, if not outright dangerous. At least Ortho's friends know that if they are ever in danger or feeling unwell, Ortho is one of the most attentive companions they could have. Though he doesn't always have access to his state-of-the-art medical equipment, Ortho has diligent bedside manner. He remains attentive to the sleeping habits and nutritive intake of all of his friends, pointing out when their vital signs turn concerning.

It also feels important to mention that one of Ortho's favorite things to do in response to certain problems is to threaten them with his technomantic energy cannon. He seems to only ever use it as a threat display, but no matter how long people know him, they never seem to be quite confident he won't use it for real...

2. What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

It's hard not to stand out as Ortho— he's the world's first self-aware Technomantic Humanoid! That means he isn't exactly his body; Ortho is specifically an autonomous AI program on a chip who uses different robotic bodies to interact with the world. While Ortho himself is not magical at all, his circuitry was so slammed with positive and negative energy during a showdown that Ortho's programs essentially manifested a heart for him. At that same time, the memories of the person who he was meant to replace were shared with him, imbued indelibly into his circuitry like a living memorial— Ortho even admits to feeling a warmth inside himself that he could identify as being the previous Ortho's spirit resting in his heart.

Even more than that, the previous memories he had were actually that of his creator, Idia, diligently put together from Idia's perception of his late little brother's perspective. In that way, Ortho stands both as being born from the two organic Shroud brothers as well as a manifestation of his very own unique self, a person fully developed at his own decision, from choices spanning back to before he even had developed proper emotion expression protocols.

All of this set the blueprints for him to develop behavioral patterns that are at least somewhat unique among the cast, even if certain traits overlap. For instance, unlike his brother, Ortho is bold and unapologetic about asking to spend time with the player, more than once telling the player they're going to stay and play with him for a while– even though before he evolved, he was more keen to ask permission. His analytical nature goes as far as him monitoring the vital signs of those around him to make sure they are well, and he is quick to offer solutions if anyone he is with is uncomfortable or struggling, especially when it comes to their health. And, juuuust like Idia, Ortho isn't free from his own ego trips. He loves being good at things and especially at video games. While under the influence of a phantom and sharing a consciousness with the person he was meant to replace, he subjected his 'friends' to super-hard difficulty level games before playing the proper difficulty with them, likely just posturing his superiority.

Lastly, he's uniquely proud… of being created. Ortho does not mind or reject his technomantic vessels. He doesn't want to be a living flesh human, even if he wants to share in their physical experiences to the point of being given a processor to consume food as fuel in a certain body. Ortho is, despite being a person, incredibly proud of being the first autonomous AI consciousness built specifically by his brother. He acts as the living doll of the story, and while that character usually embraces physical humanity, Ortho loves being Idia's creation as well as his brother.

3. What does your character think their flaws are? What do they think their strengths are? What are their actual flaws and strengths?

Flaws are not always as devastating to Ortho as they may be to others, and he certainly doesn't think he has many. After all, he was created by the incredible Technomantic genius, Idia Shroud! But before he was truly actualized as a person, he did have one particular doubt; Ortho often worried that he could not effectively be the Ortho he needed to be in order to save his creator from his crushing depression. Since then he's become more hopeful, even if those doubts persist. His new flaws according to himself? all the things he hasn't properly learned, of course! Even with the internet at his fingertips, Ortho loves to learn "organically" (albeit much faster than a human could) and doesn't get everything right on his first try— which he just turns into more data, another thing he would consider a strength.

…He does seem to be completely blind to the fact his often spiteful and trouble-making attitude could be seen as a flaw. That's a feature, not a bug, if you ask him. He seems to be quite proud of his cute, trickstery personality, and in general doesn't seem to mean any harm in his spitefulness. Ortho can also be a bit obsessive and almost domineering with his friends now, whether it be because he wants them to spend time with him or because he's concerned for their health (and is used to having to fight Idia to get him to take care of his.)

While Ortho definitely sees some of his own strengths, he misses others enough that Yuu and other characters are given chances to point out those strengths to him. He doesn't always register things that come easy to him as being more than mundane, even though he can generally conceive of human limitations. This leads to him not always realizing what about his features would actually be amazing to humans, but he also loves the unpredictability of that exact thing.

His greatest strength by far is his ability to turn losses and disadvantages into wins. Ortho learns seamlessly from small mistakes without getting self conscious, and in general sees losing to others or making mistakes as opportunities both to learn as well as to eliminate variables. In fact, he's used the phrase thanks to a friend of his, "don't let zero stay zero"; Ortho will act even if the odds look like 0%, all for the sake of changing that percentage by even a decimal, going from zero to hero. Because of all this, his insatiable thirst for knowledge is unhindered by personal doubt.

4. What is a common misconception other characters have about your character?

Unfortunately for him, his appearance also makes people see him as more of a robot than he wants to be seen as, and despite being effectively 16 years old, Ortho's shell was built to resemble a much younger person. Folks taken in by his appearance are quickly treated to Ortho's playfully spiteful attitude, as he wastes no time trying to correct people on their misconceptions about him. The knowledge of his technical superiority can put Ortho into a pompous, condescending mood toward a person, which will only subside once that person accepts Ortho the way he wishes to be seen.

They also tend not to immediately understand what exactly he is. Before becoming a person, Ortho was often seen as, and even describes himself as being, no different than a PC or [motor]cycle, even after his AI has become advanced enough to place the building blocks for his self-awareness. People, including his brother's schoolmates, either saw him as Only a robot despite his advancements, or could only see him as a person, unable to distinguish where his autonomy ended.

Now his friends have come around to see him as a person, but news of his personhood hasn't reached everyone in the world's ears. Some strangers treat Ortho as a doll or Thing, which irritates both brothers— but that Ortho is also perfectly happy to put in the effort to prove those strangers wrong.

Character Abilities:

Ortho and Idia imply that as a non-magical equivalent, Ortho's abilities may be on par with the school's strongest mage, and his reasoning ability is thought to exceed that of his human peers. Since Ortho thrives when he finds alternate solutions to problems, I'd like to start him off in a Gear that lacks some of his usual features and have him either earn back other Gears with stardust or build new Gears.

Even though it's said not to be magic, the capabilities of technomancy far exceed that of real world science. It wouldn't exist without magic, so that's the important part.

The capabilities of his Gears are listed at the bottom of this character sheet.

Any comments or questions you would like us to know? A funny meme is also welcome!

As mentioned, Ortho is not his body! That means he has many bodies, called Gears. I hope to have him earn back as rewards eventually, and with the right materials and some helpers it's potentially possible to create new gears if that's allowed. He'll arrive from the date of and equipped in his Union/B-Day Jacket Gear for the sake of him having the smoothest experience interacting with humans and also so that I can play with temporarily nerfing some of the features he's used to having for a little while and also exploit him having a form that humans apparently find more approachable. He'll have more fun that way.

Re: Age being Undefined: Officially, Ortho's age simply isn't defined, because he simply isn't definable in the capacity of human aging. However, he is playing the role of a 16 year old like his freshman classmates, and will generally interact with the world being perceived as such. His body was meant to resemble someone younger than that, and it isn't uncommon for other characters to mistake him for being younger than that, but he's got memories from being ages 0-8 and 10-16.
